Bruce W.

Private tutor in Coconut Creek, FL

Education

Master's degree in electrical engineering, 1983 (age nineteen), The Cooper Union (twin full scholarships: Cooper Union Foundation Scholarship & N. Y. State Regents Scholarship)

Experience

Taught at university level for two years: EE, physics, mathematics; resume abounds with impressive items, including built (with own hands) first NSA-approved multi-level secure (viz., high-assurance military-amenable) RDBMS engine; commendation from VP Al Gore for saving 18 months and $500M on the Dept. of State NMS system security control retrofitting. My teaching experience is very broad. I served as a tutor throughout high school and partway through college. I possess outstanding verbal communication skills, which you may not find among tutors who focus on the sciences. I even give lectures about a variety of topics--ranging from foundations of computer science, to how to use the Internet, to principles of the evolution/creationism debate--for retired seniors at the Wynmoor community in Broward Co., FL, where I reside. It is extremely fulfilling when a senior with no technical background whatsoever comes over after a lecture and pumps my hand, exclaiming, "You know, Bruce, that was terrific, I actually learned X, Y, and Z." Needless to say, for ANYONE to learn ANYTHING in such an open, public setting is itself an achievement. The pedagogy of my instruction is greatly increased through my use of extremely well designed visual aids. I am a follower of the Edward Tufte school of "quantifying information" and "visual explanations." VERY IMPORTANTLY, I am extremely personable and able to communicate with your child on ANY level. I am NOT a "dork" who speaks only mathematics or computer science. I make learning fun! (You can feel free to delete that exclamation point if it's a bit over the top.)

Hobbies

I am fundamentally a scholar. I own thousands of books and, upon looking something up, allow my thoughts to drift from here to there, chasing each new subject from book to book to book. I am an outstanding, patient teacher who has a gift for ANALOGY and METAPHOR (this has even helped in expert witness testimony, where I must explain complex computer science concepts to intelligent--but ignorant of the subject--persons, such as attorneys and judges). I believe that focusing on the CONCEPTS helps your child excel, whereas nearly everyone dwells on the DETAILS. Details without concepts are like making a list of what foods can or cannot be purchased without having an underlying understanding of nutrition and proper food choices in general. I am religiously observant, which means--in a practical setting--that I focus on making the individual student feel special and recognize the value of achievement. I provide instant, positive feedback and respond to failure with gentle encouragement that attempts immediately to identify the problem areas and develop a suitable plan of action for their redress. I enjoy swimming, soccer, and Skyping with my twin boys, who live in Bethesda, MD, with their mom.
